When Rambo Paints: Hollywood Star Sylvester Stallone Gets Fine Art Retrospective After 35 Years Of Painting

in
the
early
1970s
when
a
story
idea
for
a
never-say-die
protagonist
was
percolating
in
Sylvester
Stallone’s
head,
he
decided
to
first
visualize
this
character
on
canvas.
However,
he
didn’t
want
to
use
a
brush
because
he
felt
that
this
man
was
forged
by
the
hardships
of
life.
So
instead,
he
carved
an
image
on
the
canvas
using
a
screwdriver.

“If
he
looked
interesting
visually,
then
I
think
that
he
would
translate
through
to
literature
and
then
cinema,” he
said. “I
know
it
sounds
ambitious,
but
that
was
the
genesis
of
Rocky.”

Stallone
would
go
on
to
famously
complete
a
90-page
script
in
three-and-a-half
days
about
poor
Italian
American
boxer,
Rocky
Balboa,
who
gets
a
shot
at
becoming
world
heavyweight
champion.
Released
in
1976,
the
small-budget
film
catapulted
Stallone
to
stardom
and
produced
a
slew
of
sequels
–
the
most
recent
being “Creed
11” in
2018,
co-starring
Michael
B.
Jordan.

Rocky’s
success
was
quickly
followed
up
by
yet
another
multi-sequel
vehicle
that
Stallone
had
originally
co-written: “First
Blood,” released
in
1982,
tells
the
story
of
John
Rambo,

to

to

Having
discovered
his
love
of
painting
at
a
young
age,

young
New
Yorker
used

sign
his
early
experimental
works “Mike
Stallone.”

painting

remained

constant
part
of
his
creative
life,
his
artistic
output
fueling
his
cinematic
work
and
vice
versa.
In
fact,
he
once
deemed
himself
a
better
painter
than
actor.

“Painting
is
the
purest
of
all
arts.
And
it’s
not
like
film,
where
500
people
are
responsible
for
the
final
product.
Here
it’s
one
man
who
has

take

fame,

ridicule
or
the
criticism,”
the
actor
said

press
conference
on
December

when
he

Museum
Hagen
to
launch
an
exhibition

Retrospective.”

He
added
that
despite
having
painted
for
more
than
50
years,
it
remains
a
new
world
to
him. “Fear
and
anxiety
push
you
forward,”
said
the
75-year-old. “They
push
you
to
the
next
level.
I
also
approached
painting
with
respect
and
later
ventured
into
other
forms.
Failure,
however,
remains
the
best
way
for
me
to
learn.”

In
the
1970s
and
until
the
end
of
the
80s,
Stallone
created
dark,
expressive
works
in
which,
among
other
things,
he
processed
the
death
of
his
manager.
At
that
time,
he
worked
mainly
with
illustrative
graphic
lines
and
bright
colors.

This
changed
around
1990,
when
the
avid
art
collector
immersed
himself
in
the
world
of
contemporary
art
and
studied
artists
such
as
Picasso,
Gerhard
Richter
orAnselm
Kiefer.

Inspired
by
the
abstract
works
of
Mark
Rothko,
he
developed
his
own
style
and
created
numerous
expressionist
pieces
including
self-portraits.

“That’s
what
I
love
about
painting,
it’s
the
only
true
communication
you
can
have,”
Sylvester
Stallone
once
said. “Painting

fastest
and
purest
translator
of

subconscious.

something
is

screwdriver-carved
piece
from
1975 “Finding
Rocky”

part
of
the
exhibition

to

Charting
the
actor’s
works
from
the
late
1960s
to
present
day,
and
commemorating
his
having
turned
75
in
July
this
year,
the
collection
features
approximately
50
paintings,
among
them
self-portraits

never-before-seen

works.

His
works

at
the
State
Russian

my
life,
I
realized
that
man
is
totally
pressed
upon
by
the
sense
of
time
racing.
Everything

timed.

started

are
developing
a
sequel
to
their
much-loved
superhero
movie “Shang-Chi
And
The
Legend
Of
The
Ten
Rings”,
with
co-writer
and
helmer
Destin
Daniel
Cretton
returning
to
direct.
According
to
Variety,
Cretton
is
also
working
on
a
new
Marvel
Cinematic
Universe
series
for
Disney
Plus.

Weekend

The
filmmaker
has
signed
an
exclusive
multi-year
overall
deal
with
Disney-owned
Marvel
Studios
and
Hulu’s
Onyx
Collective,
under
which
he
will
develop
TV
projects
for
both
Marvel
Studios
for
Disney
Plus
and
Onyx
Collective
across
all
platforms.

Cretton
will
be
producing
the
projects
through
a
new
company
he
is
launching
with
partner
Asher
Goldstein,
named
Family
Owned.

office,
becoming
one
of
the
most
successful
films

pandemic
era.

After Eternals, West Side Story Banned From Saudi Arabia, UAE & Other Middle East Regions

Eternals,
another
Hollywood
film
has
been
banned
from
several
Middle
East
countries
including
Saudi
Arabia,
Kuwait,
Bahrain,
Oman,
Qatar
and
the
UAE.
According
to
Deadline,

West
Side
Story
will
not
be
released
in
these
countries
due
to
censorship
rules
about
a
transgender
character
called
Anybodys.

Since
ET

Deadline
revealed
that
an
official
statement
about
the
ban
has
not
been
released,
but
reportedly
the
film
has
not
received
distribution
rights
due
to
the
character
Anybodys
played
by
Iris
Menas,
a
nonbinary
performer.
While
Saudi
Arabia
and
Kuwait
did
not
approve
distribution
certificates,
the
censors
in
the
other
regions
requested
cuts
but
Disney
opted
to
not
make
the
edits.

This
isn’t
the
first
time
that
a
movie
has
been
banned
from
Middle
East
countries.
Earlier
this
year,
Marvels’

Eternals
was
also
banned
in
the
Middle
East
region
over
censorship
issues.
UAE
eventually
released
Eternals
after
removing
every
intimate
scene
from
the
movie.

West
Side
Story,
set
to
release
this
week
is
Steven
Spielberg’s
version
of
the
1957
Broadway
musical
of
the
same
name.
The
film
has
already
created
quite
the
buzz
across
the
globe
and
has
also
received
a
nod
for
Best
Cinematography
from
the
New
York
Film
Critics
Circle.
